Krakin’ Teet ‘Cross Geechee Generations

Krakin’ Teet ‘Cross Geechee Generations

Two Geechee elders and two Geechee teens joined our founder to krak teet about controversial topics. Co-sponsored by Georgia Humanities, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, through funding from the Georgia General Assembly, the event took place on Saturday, April 27th, 2024. Here’s a peek into what we talked about.

Panelists include: Theron “Ike” Carter, Freddie Gilyard, Hollyn Anthony, and Justice Clark. Moderated by Trelani Michelle. Artists, Suzanne Jackson and Jerome Meadows are also featured.

Part 1

introductions and the panelists explaining why they agree/disagree with 1) knowing about Gullah Geechee culture growing up and 2) needing to leave Savannah (or your hometown) to be successful.

Part 1

1) It’s okay to talk Geechee at home but not at school/work. 2) There’s no such thing as bad kids. 3) Artists have a responsibility to talk about the injustices around them.

Part 3

1) Respect isn’t given, it’s earned. 2)”The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.” 3) People over 40 years old just don’t understand what kids are going through. 4) “It’s alright to tell a man to lift himself by his bootstraps, but it is a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his bootstraps.”
